A CCRAS-led pharmaceutical quality study across 5 Indian states has documented significant batch variation in commercially available Ksheerabala 101 Avarthi — the 101-time distilled medicated oil that is among Kerala Ayurveda's most prized preparations.

Findings

The study sampled 30 batches from 12 manufacturers across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh:

  • Active compound variation: up to 4-fold between batches from different manufacturers
  • Sesame oil + cow milk authenticity: variable; some adulteration with cheaper vegetable oils detected
  • Distillation cycle count claims: only 60% of "101 Avarthi" labelled products demonstrated chromatographic profiles consistent with 100+ cycles
  • Standardisation gap

Ksheerabala 101 Avarthi is widely prescribed for chronic Vata-Pitta disorders (insomnia, headache, anxiety, multiple sclerosis support, cognitive decline). Clinical outcomes depend heavily on preparation authenticity — but until this study, there was no standardised quality reference for the market.

    Recommendations from CCRAS

  • Adoption of HPTLC fingerprint analysis as quality control standard
  • Source-of-origin labelling (Kerala-prepared vs other states)
  • Batch-level traceability via QR code
  • Periodic third-party quality audits for AYUSH-certified manufacturers
  • Kerala manufacturers' response

Kottakkal AVS, Vaidyaratnam, and Oushadhi (Kerala govt PSU) have committed to public quality dashboards showing each batch's HPTLC fingerprint. Other manufacturers are evaluating compliance pathway.

    Practitioner guidance

Kerala practitioners traditionally source Ksheerabala from established Kerala manufacturers (AVS, Vaidyaratnam). The CCRAS findings reinforce that this source-discipline matters.

    Patient guidance

For Ksheerabala 101 Capsule or oil purchase, prioritise:

  • Kerala-prepared products
  • Verified manufacturer (AVS, Vaidyaratnam, Oushadhi, AVN Coimbatore)
  • Batch number visible
  • Avoid generic "Kerala Ayurveda" labels without clear manufacturer
