Pizhichil Treatment — Kerala's Signature Therapy
Source: AyurConnect Editorial
Pizhichil — warm medicated oil bath — is uniquely Kerala. It combines Snehana (oleation) + Swedana (sudation) in one procedure, making it deeply Vata-pacifying.
**Procedure.** Patient lies on a Droni (wooden treatment table). Warm medicated oil is squeezed from cotton cloths dipped in the oil, continuously bathing the body. Two therapists synchronise pouring + gentle massage for 45-60 minutes.
**Indications.** Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic neuropathy, post-stroke rehabilitation, multiple sclerosis support, frozen shoulder, sciatica, fibromyalgia.
**Evidence.** Effective in reducing pain scores + improving range of motion in degenerative joint disease. Less studied than Sirodhara but clinically powerful.
**Course.** 14-21 daily sessions for therapeutic effect.
**Cost.** ₹2,000-4,000 per session. Total ₹30,000-80,000.
**Best season.** Karkidaka (mid-July to mid-August) — body absorbs oils deepest in monsoon. October-March alternative.
**Best centres.** Arya Vaidya Sala Kottakkal, Vaidyaratnam, Sanjeevanam — these have the trained 2-therapist teams Pizhichil requires.
**Pre-requisites.** Internal Snehana (Pana / Anuvasana Basti) typically precedes Pizhichil. The Vaidya determines the sequencing.
**Pairs with.** Njavarakizhi (rice bolus fomentation) on alternating days for maximum Vata pacification.
