Ayurvedic understanding
Charaka describes 5 types of Shwasa (dyspnoea) — Tamaka Shwasa corresponds to modern bronchial asthma. Etiology: Kapha-Medas dushti combined with Vata Pranavaha-srotas vitiation. Triggers: cold + damp climate, Kapha-heavy diet, allergens, stress. Ayurveda treats the predisposition (Prakriti correction) rather than only the acute attack.
Kerala treatments
Vasarishta is the classical Tamaka Shwasa formulation — taken twice daily, reduces attack frequency over 3–6 months. Sitopaladi Choornam with honey for productive cough. Vamana Panchakarma (controlled emesis under physician supervision) clears excess Kapha and is the most disease-modifying intervention available. Inhalers must continue.
