18 types of Kushta

Sushruta enumerated 18 varieties of Kushta. The relevant ones for modern psoriasis are Ekakushta (single large patch type, plaque psoriasis), Sidhma (scaly thin patches, guttate psoriasis), and Kitibha (thick rough patches, chronic plaque). Eczema maps to Vicharchika. Each subtype has slightly different protocols.

Treatment approach

Treatment always begins with deep Shodhana — Vamana (therapeutic emesis) for Kapha-dominant types, Virechana for Pitta-dominant. Then external — Takra Dhara (medicated buttermilk pouring on the scalp for scalp psoriasis), Lepa (medicated paste), Snana with Triphala-decoction water. Internal Rasayanas for 3-6 months.
