About PCOS / PCOD
Aartava-kshaya · Granthi
Ayurvedic understanding
PCOS is described in classical Ayurveda under Aartava-kshaya (diminished menstrual flow) and Granthi (cystic formation). The root cause is dushti of Kapha and Medas (fat metabolism) in the Aartavavaha-srotas (reproductive channels), compounded by Vata aggravation that disrupts the regular Rtu-chakra. Modern symptoms — irregular cycles, hirsutism, weight gain, insulin resistance — map cleanly to this dosha picture.
Treatment approach
Treatment is typically 3–6 months and proceeds in three phases. First, Shodhana — Virechana (therapeutic purgation) clears Kapha-Pitta from the system. Second, Shamana — herbal formulations (see below) restore Aartava flow and balance insulin signalling. Third, Rasayana — long-term rejuvenation for ovarian health. Diet and lifestyle correction is non-negotiable.
What modern research says
Multiple RCTs (Choudhary et al. 2019; AYUSH-CCRAS 2022) have shown that Ayurvedic combinations like Shatavari + Ashoka + Triphala reduce LH:FSH ratio and improve menstrual regularity comparable to metformin-based protocols, with significantly fewer side effects.
