About Insomnia & Sleep Disorders
Anidra · Nidra-nasha · ഉറക്കമില്ലായ്മ
Ayurvedic understanding
Sleep (Nidra) is one of the three Upastambha (sub-pillars) of life alongside Aahar (food) and Brahmacharya (vital energy). Anidra (insomnia) arises from Vata aggravation in Manas (mind), Pitta excess (irritability + early waking), or Kapha deficiency (low Tama-guna for sleep induction). Modern stress, screen exposure, irregular meals, and caffeine after noon are the most common contributors.
Kerala treatments
Shirodhara — continuous warm-oil stream on forehead — is the signature Kerala therapy for insomnia. 7–14 daily sessions produce measurable EEG changes (increased alpha waves, reduced cortisol). Combined with Brahmi Ghrita (1 tsp at bedtime), Jatamansi + Tagara herb tea, and rigorous sleep hygiene. Avoid benzodiazepine dependence — Shirodhara works long-term.
