Grahani — the small intestine
Grahani is the duodenum-jejunum, the seat of digestive Agni in Ayurveda. When Agni is weak (Mandagni) or irregular (Vishamagni), food does not get properly transformed and Ama is generated. The symptoms — alternating diarrhea and constipation, bloating, post-meal urgency, fatigue — match IBS-M almost exactly.
Subtype-specific treatment
IBS-D (Pittaja Grahani): cooling formulations, kutaja-based herbs. IBS-C (Vataja Grahani): warming, oleating, gentle laxatives — never harsh Virechana. IBS-M (mixed): Agni-restoration first, then symptom management. Generic "IBS herbs" miss this distinction.
