Definition
**Guna** (गुण) is the inherent quality of a dravya. It cannot exist independently — guna is *samavayi* (inherent) in its substrate. The 41 gunas describe everything a dravya does, both pharmacologically and metaphysically.
The 5 Categories
1. Sartha Guna (5) — Sense-object qualities *Shabda, sparsha, rupa, rasa, gandha* — the qualities perceived by the five jnanendriya.
2. Gurvadi Guna (20) — Pharmacological qualities
These are the **most clinically important** gunas. They appear as 10 binary opposites:
| Pair | Vata effect | Pitta effect | Kapha effect |
| Guru–Laghu | guru↑ V↓ | guru↑ P↓ | guru↑ K↑ |
| Sheeta–Ushna | sheeta↑ V↑ | ushna↑ P↑ | sheeta↑ K↑ |
| Snigdha–Rooksha | snigdha↓ V | rooksha↑ V | snigdha↑ K |
| Mridu–Khara | mridu↓ V↓ K | khara↑ V | khara↓ K |
| Manda–Tikshna | manda↑ K | tikshna↑ P | manda↑ K |
| Sthira–Sara | sthira↑ K | sara↑ V | sara↓ K |
| Slakshna–Khara | slakshna↑ K | khara↑ P | slakshna↑ K |
| Sukshma–Sthula | sukshma↑ V | sthula↑ K | sthula↑ K |
| Sandra–Drava | sandra↑ K | drava↑ P | drava↓ K |
| Vishada–Pichchhila | pichchhila↑ K | vishada↑ V | pichchhila↑ K |
**Clinical rule of thumb**: To pacify a dosha, use dravyas with opposite gunas. To aggravate (when needed — e.g., before Vamana), use similar gunas. This is the doctrine of *samanya-vishesha siddhanta*.
3. Paradi Guna (10) — Pharmaceutical qualities
Para, apara, yukti, sankhya, samyoga, vibhaga, prithakta, parimana, sanskara, abhyasa. These govern formulation, dose, timing, polypharmacy, and habituation.
- **Sanskara** (processing) — the bhavana, shodhana, marana of Rasashastra
- **Samyoga** (combination) — synergistic vs antagonistic herb pairs
- **Parimana** (quantity) — dose-response
- **Abhyasa** (habituation) — long-term effects of repeated dosing
4. Vaisheshika Guna (5)
*Buddhi, sukha, dukkha, ichchha, dvesha, prayatna* — Vaisheshika philosophy's mental qualities, recognized in Ayurveda for understanding manasika roga (mental disorders).
5. Adhyatmika Guna (Triguna)
*Sattva, rajas, tamas* — the three mental modes that govern manasika prakriti.
Clinical Application
When you write a prescription, you're choosing a dravya whose **rasa-guna-veerya-vipaka** profile is opposite to the patient's vikriti.
**Example**: Patient with vata-vikriti (rooksha, sheeta, laghu, khara). You select a dravya with snigdha-ushna-guru-mridu gunas (e.g., bala ksheera pacha kashayam).
This is why mastering gurvadi guna is the difference between a junior BAMS who memorises medicines and a senior physician who reasons from first principles.
Self-test
- List the 10 binary pairs of gurvadi gunas from memory.
- For a kapha-aggravated patient with chronic congestion, which 4 gurvadi gunas would your dravya selection emphasize?
- Explain "sanskara" with one Rasashastra example.
